Ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, who was convicted in 2013 on public corruption charges, weighs in on the five-count indictment against New York Mayor Eric Adams.”It’s the Democratic Party going after another Black mayor,” he said in a video posted on X. “This happens all over the country, Texas, Oklahoma, California, Florida, New Orleans, Detroit, Chicago.”On Thursday, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan unsealed a five-count indictment against Adams, charging him with bribery, fraud and soliciting illegal foreign campaign donations from Turkey when he was a top elected official in Brooklyn and continued after he became mayor in 2022.Additionally, the indictment alleges that Adams “sought and accepted improper valuable benefits, such as luxury international travel, including from wealthy foreign businesspeople and at least one Turkish government official seeking to gain influence over him.”Kilpatrick said “my heart and prayers go out to (Adams) and his family because they (are) in for a dog fight, you know. It brought back some eerie feelings for me because those were the first charges in my case, illegal campaign contributions. None of those charges made it to the courtroom; they were later dropped but they gave the feds the entrance point to start the J Edgar Hoover treatment on the people that they wanted to break down.”In January 2021, President Donald Trump commuted Kilpatrick’s 28-year sentence to time served, which end up being around eights years.
