Fierce gunfight as soldiers raid Gana’s militant hideout, kill two members (photos)

Two armed militants linked to the late Benue gang leader, Terwase Akwaza, widely known as Gana were killed by the Nigerian Army following a military operation on a hideout.

John Eneche the spokesperson for the defence headquarters, made the disclosure in a statement on Tuesday September 15.

He said the attack was carried out on Monday, September 14, after intelligence reports indicated that some of Gana’s militia elements were seeking refuge in a hideout in the Adu area in Chanchanji council ward of Takum local government area of Taraba state.

Eneche stated that acting on the intelligence reports, the military deployed troops to the hideout at Adu.

The spokesperson said the militias fired at troops as they closed in on their position. He said the soldiers responded by returning fire on the militants, thereby killing two in the process while others fled.

The soldiers were said to have recovered 2 locally made pistols from the Gana gang camp.

Eneche also disclosed that the troops then executed additional raids on other identified hideouts at Chanchanji in Takum local government area of Taraba state and Sai in Katsina Ala local government area of Benue state.

He said Benjamin Valentine and Milton Gbegi were arrested during the raid on Sai while Isaac Hilega aka Bawasa and Godwin Terwase were arrested at Chanchanji.

The military disclosed that the arrested suspects were undergoing preliminary investigation and would be handed over to the police for further action.

Meanwhile, the controversy trailing the death of Terwase Agwaza also known as Gana has taken a new dimension as some Benue youths under the auspice of Federation of Jukun Youths (FJY) commended the military for killing the notorious criminal.

In a statement signed by the body’s national president, Agbujoro Agya Agbujoro, the youths said the death of Gana is a big victory in the fight against insecurity in Benue state.

Agbujoro described the criminal’s death as “far-reaching success”, wondering why Tiv youths were disgruntled by the death of Gana.
