Former Netherlands midfielder Wesley Sneijder has announced his retirement from football after 17 years of trophy laden career.

The 35-year-old last featured for Qatari football league side Al-Gharafa where he scored 15 goals in 22 appearances in just one season at the club.

Sneijder was part of the historic Inter Milan team that won treble under Portuguese tactician Jose Mourinho in 2010.

In the same year, he led the Oranje Boys to the final of the FIFA World Cup but lost to Spain by just one goal in the final of the tournament in South Africa.

The midfielder, who spent just two seasons at the Santiago Bernabeu won one La Liga title during his reign.

Sneijder moved to Turkey in 2013 after a successful four year reign at the San Siro Stadium where he won a total of six trophies.

He also led Galatasaray to two Super Lig triumphs, three Turkish League and three Turkish Super Cup titles in four seasons.

And the 35-year-old wrapped up his outstanding career winning the Qatari Stars Cup last campaign before eventually drawing the curtains on his career.

He has however taken up a new role with his hometown club FC Utrecht.

Now I’ve retired from football I want a nice place to share my memories. My connection to the town is big,” Sneijder told the Dutch club’s YouTube channel.

Sneijder, who won several individual awards including FIFA World Cup Silver Ball and Bronze Boot at the 2010 World Cup kicked off his career at Ajax youth team.

He won the Eredivisie title and two Dutch Cups in Amsterdam before leaving his home country join Spanish League side Real Madrid in a deal around £23 million in 2007.

The midfielder made his national team debut in 2003 – scoring 31 goals in 134 appearances for the Dutch side before retiring last year.
