Green Day took a jab at Elon Musk during their first concert of the year in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The band’s frontman, Billie Joe Armstrong, altered the lyrics of their 2004 hit “American Idiot” to mock the Tesla CEO, who has been connected with Donald Trump, even speaking at an event after Trump’s inauguration.
Instead of singing “I’m not a part of the redneck agenda,” Armstrong sang: “I’m not a part of the Elon agenda.” Fans quickly noticed the change and took to social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, to comment on the dig at Musk, who recently drew criticism for appearing to do a Nazi salute on the day of Trump’s inauguration.
Another fan @p1zzapug chimed in: “Can’t wait for Elon to throw a hissy fit so I can laugh.”
And @spidermanfan.3161 commented: “1:07 ‘im not of a Elon agenda’ BAHAHAHAHAH BILLIE JOE IS SAVAGE FOR DISSING MUSK BAHAHA,” under a YouTube clip of the moment.
This isn’t the first time Green Day has tweaked the lyrics of “American Idiot” to take a swipe at MAGA supporters.
It was New Year’s Eve 2023 when the band made headlines at Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, belting out a thinly-veiled hit at Trump with the lyric: “I’m not a part of the MAGA agenda”. Not too long after, Elon Musk ribbed the group for their change in tone, tweeting out: “Green Day goes from raging against the machine to milquetoastedly raging for it,” topped off with laughing emojis.
Deemed a crucial backer of Trump’s White House comeback, it’s no surprise Musk has found himself spearheading the Department of Government Efficiency under Trump – a move that’s stirred up a fair share of controversy among Americans. Yesterday was also notable as it marked Trump’s grand return to the White House, reports the Irish Star.
